Salgado Experiment

Graphic Design
Project Overview
Using the techniques and concepts from the famous photographer Sebastiáo Salgado, I took a trip to the Hoh Rainforest to capture some photos. Like the concepts for Salgado, I let the photos come to me and appreciate the nature and sights around me.
My Contributions
As this was a solo project, I captured the photos over the course of a three day trip as well as editing the collection. Along with this, I did extensive research on Sebastiáo Salgado, his concepts, and style. Taking these concepts and editing styles I worked to create a catalog of nature photography.
Throughout this process a lot of research into Sebastiáo Salgado was done to be able use his editing styles and concepts. A main concept that came from Salgado was "My camera allowed nature to speak to me, and it was my privilege to listen". I took this concept into great consideration when taking my photographs. Rather than seeking and picking out subjects to photograph, I waited for something to speak to me with composure and beauty. This concept is what sparked the inspiration of this catalog. Along with concept, editing was a large portion of the process. While researching, I learned a lot about Salgado's editing style. Black and white was used in every photo of Salgados, with high contrast and slight film grain. He was also known for his "layered" effect in his photos, having an even distribution of darks, midtowns, and highlights often in a gradual gradient. Taking this editing information into account along with his conceptual ideas many of these photos show inspiration from Salgado and his work.
